Philosophy

Let's go back to the  8th century BC. In Greek mythology, two sea monsters, Scylla and Charybdis, guarded the Strait of Messina, posing a grave threat to seafarers.


Scylla was a horrible six-headed monster who lived on a rock on one side of a narrow strait. Charybdis was a whirlpool on the other side. To avoid Scylla meant passing too close to Charybdis. Avoiding Charybdis meant passing too close to Scylla. Odysseus, in Homer’s epic poem, a sailor is forced to choose which of these two monsters to confront while passing through the strait. 


I believe that the same conundrum facing business owners with their digital marketing. They're constantly stuck between Scylla; 'a lack of understanding of the social media landscape and how to maximize it', and Charybdis, 'Experiences & attempts to work with past professionals who've promised to deliver results, generate sales and drive revenue, but in the end, failed to'. The principle of ‘framework before work’ is one I highly believe in, and many of the greats have paid homage to this. Abraham Lincoln is quoted for having said, “if I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend six sharpening my axe.” religious texts, philosophers and even fable have all emphasized about the importance of a good foundation and in the online marketing space, this echoes even truer, the plan is the foundation for all your social media marketing success and the determining factor in who wins their customers attention, loyalty, attention and eventually purchasing choice and who doesn’t. Personally, I think that there are physics to achieving your marketing goals - and they can’t be broken. Tools are the second foundational building block that your marketing & eventually, business success sits on. Roadblocks are close to inevitable in the marketing space. Zuck’s Facebook is constantly changing its algorithms, Dorsey's Twitter has become close to impossible to debunk. In the marketing space, there are three types of brands, brands that make things happen, brands that watch & wait for things to happen, and brands that are lagging constantly wondering what just happened! You want to be a brand that’s making things happen, and for that, you need the tools and systems.

Help

Success is a monomaniacal focus on one thing, most business owners fall prey to the trap of believing that their business expertise automatically translates to marketing. I would like to pose a simple, yet interesting question: Who is the greatest soccer player of all time?


Take a moment to think about it… You could have easily said Pele, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo. The list goes on.


The fact is, no answers to right or wrong. It’s a bit of a trick question because it all comes down to your personal opinion and preference. But now, onto the real question: What do all the greats have in common?


They all stuck to just one thing. That’s it. It’s how anyone becomes the best at anything. That’s one element of the ‘success DNA’. Take Messi for instance, love him, hate him, question whether it’s even fair for one man to bear all that talent…. one thing for sure there’s no denying he is one of the greatest of all time and has the accolades to back that up.


But do you see Messi being world-class at volleyball and athletics, or any other sport or thing?… Thats an emphatic No!


It’s the same with your marketing. To become an industry shaper, you need to sacrifice. Sacrifice what? The simple answer, 'control.'
